In other response to this as a whole - anytime we travel across the Pacific or Atlantic - we don’t make any set plans for 2 days. Mainly in case we get delayed and also so we can settle in. When we went to Greece a couple years ago, we arrived on Monday and I think the first tour we did was Wednesday. We were able to book an impromptu dinner when we arrived & explored for a couple of days.
Instinctively, we always tend to settle in when we first arrived, but I hadn’t given this a great deal of thought. You are so right about the first 24 hours.
I love this reminder to settle in on the first day and have my creature-comforts on standby to help ground me. I am a homebody who likes to travel so it’s a constant game of reconciling these two parts of me.
Oh no! That food poisoning experience sounds awful, especially after walking in the rain and being so hungry. I’m glad your first day at the local streets was better.
Oooof, I had a similar experience in Shanghai… it was on Day 3 of a ten day trip, and I was able to get back out there within a couple of days. But it still wasn’t fun to watch everyone else in the group enjoying dumplings and other treats while I stuck to broth and rice, lol

LOL story of my life!!!
Ooo this is so exciting! I’ll DM you via Substack. I deleted my IG app yesterday
The most important thing in the first 24 hours is to remember that you are no longer at home :)
